Wind Turbine - a Close LookThere are many renewable and alternative energy sources being used all over the world. They are solar energy, hydro energy, methane hydrate, and certainly wind power. Actually, wind power is one of the fastest growing energy sources in the world. For the most part wind turbines are used in power generators. Those generators can produce electricity to power homes, businesses, and even entire countries in best scenarios. The efficiency of wind power anywhere it used highly depends on the wind turbine ability to catch the wind air and convert it. So, how exactly does a wind turbine work? There are some wind turbine components you have to understand. Basically, a wind turbine is a tool used to take energy from the wind and transform it into electricity. That is it obtains kinetic energy and converts it to mechanical energy. When a good turbine is placed in the right place, a substantial volume of energy can be produced. The first and most important part of the wind turbine is the blade. Most turbines today settle vertically in the air and use three blades. Each blade is made of a composite of fiberglass and plastic. This composite is important because it can be made large and still have a light weight. There are a few blades made of wood, but the fiberglass composite turbines work more efficiently. These blades are connected with a double rotor assembly. The rotor spins as the blades spin catching the wind. The rotor then turns a rotor magnet via an assembly made of a set of pulleys. This step may be skipped with smaller models. The magnetic rotor spins around a magnetic alternator standard for electricity generation. Passing over the alternator wire magnetic field creates an electrical charge. It is sending to controller, where charge is transforming into DC power usable in homes and businesses. This is the key to the electricity production. In order to ensure proper turbine blades rotation most turbines have a tail. The tail, called also vane or boom, sticks out the back of the turbine. Its flat end makes so that the surface turns toward the wind. This in turn causes the blades to face the wind and thus move them in right direction producing the maximum amount of electricity. What many people knowing at least a little about turbines may not be aware of is the fact that many turbines are equipped with breaking systems. These brakes are there so that the turbine can be stopped when the winds get too high. That is right; there is a limit to how much wind turbine can get so it is necessary to stop the blades if there is too much wind flow. The brakes are usually electric and can stop the blades or the current being fed through the turbine, all to protect the construction. You can see there is a lot to wind turbines. They are the most important part of wind power engineering. Now you can better understand what goes into producing electricity through the wind power, so you can see why it is growing quickly around the world. |
