Wind Power

Ways to Exploit the Wind Power

In order to reduce pollution, clean up the earth, and preserve natural resources, there is a steady search for new cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient sources of power. Still, there is a source has been in use for hundreds of years, yet tends to get forgotten. That source is obviously the wind power.

Wind is a source of power virtually unlimited and incredibly cheap. On the other hand, in order to tap into that power you have to be able to control it firstly. So how exactly can the wind’s power be controlled in order to compensate some of the more inefficient and limited resources? Here some information may help us understand how the wind is controlled so we could better recognize what a superior resource it really is for powering the world.

The wind has been used by people to do a work for centuries. The windmill was used as a mill (that's why the name) to grind grain in many European countries. Today, however, windmills or other wind capturing devices could be used for even more types of work and yet to provide power to the people of the Earth.

On a hot summer day you may have plug in an electric fan to provide wind in your home and cool it down. Imagine if you could do the reverse: instead of converting electricity into wind, you convert wind energy into electricity. Well, we actually can do it. Here is how the wind is turned into electricity by the windmill.

First, the blades of the windmill are turned by the wind. As the blades turn, they turn a shaft attached to them. As shaft turns, it turns a series of gears which eventually turn a generator. The generator can be big or small, so a windmill can be used in powering a house or in powering a town or city depending on the size and number of windmills being used.

There are really a few different ways how windmills, or wind turbines, can be made. It depends on personal preference and need, which one a person or company chooses.

Firstly, there is the downwind turbine. This type has just a pair of blades. The blades turn away from the wind and the actual turbine is in front of the blades. This type is fairly common.

Secondly, there is the opposite of the downwind turbine: the upwind turbine. With this type, the wind needs to come at the blades for them to turn properly. Usually, an upwind turbine has three blades as opposed to the two with the downwind.

Finally, sometimes you may see vertical turbine. This type works well no matter what direction the wind is blowing. It is shaped somewhat like an eggbeater so that it catches wind in all directions.

Thus, there are a number of ways how countries, cities, and individuals are able to capture the power of the wind. While the wind has been used to perform tasks for people for hundreds of years, it is rather recently only it has been used as a source for electric power. There are several ways the wind could be converted into power by means of the upwind turbine, the downwind turbine, or even the vertical turbine. No matter which way is used, wind may become just the answer to the natural resource and pollution problem.
